We only use working Border Collies because they are the only dogs among herding breeds that use a wolf-like stalking manner as a predatory behavior and are perceived as threatening. The geese are never touched and are perfectly safe. Geese perceive other dogs as a nuisance. We work at complexes and parks that allow dogs, and the geese are noticeably disturbed when we come in.

Nest management is called Egg Depredation which is a means of stopping the birds from having a successful nesting season. Egg addling is a process that stops eggs from developing or hatching and can be done by oiling or removing the eggs. Oiling is our preferred method as it is the most humane and is accomplished by coating the egg(s) with a food-grade corn oil. This keeps air from passing through the eggshell, which stops the development process.

The active ingredient is naturally occurring anthraquinone, which is found in a number of plants, and works to deter geese to provide safer, cleaner properties. This is NOT the “grape spray”.

How Chemical Application Works

The chemical repellent works by producing a strong but harmless digestive irritation in the geese after they have eaten treated grass. Once they experience the adverse effects, they learn to stay away from treated areas. The chemical absorbs ultraviolet light that the geese can easily recognize, which provides a visual warning for them to stay away. Our application requires only 5 to 6 treatments per year, depending on your geographic area.
